Christmas past, present & future: the scented ghosts of December

There is a distinctly reminiscent aroma that December brings, of deep-rooted memories that stretch back as far as our noses can recall, never failing to enchant or move us at this time of year. Some festive scents are more obvious than others, such as spices used in festive culinary traditions or the nostalgia of smelling our beloved Fir and Spruce trees.

Dig a little deeper and we find the pristine scent of virgin snow, smouldering coal fires and chimney smoke; over-heated plastic fairy lights, pithy cigars and oak tinged sherry, zesty tangerines and earth scented walnuts, maybe even the hot inky scent of freshly printed books and wrapping paper. Perfect serene scent for this would be our choice of B683 by Marc-Antoine Barrois.

The classic aromas that we associate with December are orange, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and sweet spices often found in puddings and mince pies. These seasonal memories are cherished and intertwined in literature, art, music and cuisine, and within these we annually revisit, relive and envelop ourselves in a myriad of multi-sensory snapshots. Bring a festive aroma to your home this Christmas with our limited edition Shy Mimosa Tangerine Candle.

Christmas is a time of celebration and joy, but for many, it is a more thoughtful period of reflection. As the days become shorter and low light immerses us - often in gloom and darkness, we tend to look inwards, living more within our heads and hearts, delving deep into our pasts.

It is believed to be a time of ghosts and spirits, of hauntings and visitations - as so vividly depicted in Dickens's "A Christmas Carol". For some reason, as a child, the writing in this book was so visceral that I could literally smell the scenery and settings. The smoke of old London, the dimly lit stairwells and the damp, musty interiors of chambers and bedrooms, ensconced in fear and dark moralistic Victoriana and Chapel Factory's Hermit Coat is the perfect scent to transport us through these times.

In the New Testament, the story of the birth of Jesus is evocative both in its imagery and atmosphere. How would those far off lands have smelt? The cool night air under those starlit skies, the opulent perfume that the three kings may have worn, and not forgetting the Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh that they brought as gifts.

Would the angels have smelt paradisical - a majestic cloud of ethereal powder and enlightenment? Or perhaps they had no scent at all. And, of course you then have the more earthly smell of a stable, animals, the hay and a new born baby. Maison Violet's Un Air d'Apogée is one that keeps us smiling at the angels.

Whenever I hear unaccompanied voices singing carols from a time gone by, it recalls a very specific feeling - melancholy whilst simultaneously joyous, sometimes reverent and also deeply moving. In another associative instance, when I listen to this secular Christmas music, I smell extinguished matches, candle wicks, fatty wax and wisps of incense, all to a backdrop of ancient stone and old books, and Mendittorosa's Osang is the perfect creation to accompany the nostalgia.

Of all the smells that evoke the season of goodwill, the most evocative for me is the scent of a Christmas tree. In a cosy room, perhaps intensified by the heat of a log fire, or sometimes the warmth of fairy lights hanging from its branches, the humble Spruce or Fir emits the most perfect delicately nuanced scent of green forests, slightly jammy and resinous, with pine needle accents. To me, Shy Mimosa’s Fir candle is the one that evokes those very early memories and scent, and I recall how enchanted I was by it.
